Robben Island Tour - Hotel Pick-Ups & stops at interesting places pre/post tour

Beyond the Instagram worthy photos, Bo Kaap was a moving experience when Faziela told us its history. Also seeing Mandelas statue at City Hall, and the benches outside the Race Classification board. These last 2 stops were not mentioned in my guide book, so it was really good to be shown these important places. It was special insight to hear Faziela's personal recollection of when Nelson Mandela gave his first speech and she was in the crowd. She was a superb tour guide, very patient, generous and extremely knowledgable and well connected! We couldnt have picked a better guide and definitely recommend her.

Faziela was great fun. She's got a ton of energy and is a great personality, and really good to talk with and find out things from. She filled our time with her (all of it NOT at Robben Island) with taking us to interesting places in Cape Town. Very high energy, and definitely connected with the people working in the places we visited - she was able to basically skip the *entire* queue at the Robben Island ferry. Visiting sites in the city was fun - though I do feel it was a bit overpriced compared to other options while we were in town, for what we got. Unfortunately, and not Faziela's fault, the Robben Island tour itself was a MAJOR disappointment. It was a massive let down to the importance of the place. It was the definition of a 'cattle' experience: we had approximately 100 people (no exaggeration!) in our tour of the prison. We had to rush between every area, could not hear the guide, and any 'personalized' aspect of him being a former inmate was missing because he had to keep the group moving so quickly there was no way to do anything but talk over the major points, a thing any person could have done, not an inmate. But because they insist on that, there are not enough guides for the number of people. I had no more than 10 seconds at Mandela's cell before was forced to shuffle on. All of the other 'exhibits' you had no time to sit and read or take in, because there were so many people. It was really disappointing, and Robben Island deserves better.
